Elevated Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA)

OVERVIEW

This is usually found on a blood test which is ordered as part of a routine screening. A PSA can be high secondary to prostate cancer, BPH, infection, or trauma. Sexual activity, bike riding, and even digital rectal exam can possibly even lead to falsely elevated PSA.

Options for evaluation include:

Repeat PSA, more specialized blood work related to the various types of PSA, prostate imaging with MRI, or prostate biopsy, usually performed in the office, under ultrasound guidance.
